Scooby-Doo-Themed Deck Takes Magic: The Gathering by Storm

Every Magic: The Gathering player knows that moment when inspiration strikes like a bolt of lightning materializing out of thin air. Mine zapped me while I was casually browsing Etsy, leading me to an unexpected yet thrilling creative detour—a Scooby-Doo-themed Commander deck. Let’s journey through this whimsical escapade and uncover the mystery that this deck represents in both concept and play.

It all began in a typical manner. I was scrolling through the myriad of unique creations on Etsy when my eyes landed on a deck box shaped like none other than the iconic Mystery Machine from Scooby-Doo. This nostalgic piece of teal-colored cardboard was adorned with vibrant flowers and exuded the “mystery-solving” vibe that instantly transported me back to Saturday mornings of watching Scooby and the gang unravel mysteries. It was a sight to behold, and I was irresistibly compelled to build a Magic: The Gathering deck to live within it.

But a challenge presented itself: how could I engineer a Magic deck that captured the essence of the Scooby-Doo gang’s constant pursuit of clues and truth? Enter the game mechanic known as Investigate—a stroke of brilliance that transforms the cardboard art into a detective’s toolkit. Investigate creates Clue tokens on the field, which can be traded in for an advantage much like connecting the dots in a case file. You sacrifice these tokens by paying two mana to draw a card, quite literally ‘drawing’ closer to the truth with each clue unearthed. This mechanic encapsulated the very essence of mystery-solving and became the thematic backbone for my deck.

Next, my mission was to find a Commander who was not only willing to drive our Mystery Machine but lived for the thrill of uncovering secrets. Morska, Undersea Sleuth from the set “Murders at Karlov Manor” emerged as the perfect candidate. With no maximum hand size to worry about, a free Clue token handed out every turn, and the ability to grow stronger each time you draw your second card in a turn, Morska embodied the sleuth-like persistence needed to unravel a daunting mystery.

Furthermore, Morska’s color identity in green, white, and blue allowed the deck to access a well-balanced suite of spells:

– Green channeling the setup and mana ramp,

– Blue chronicling the investigation by providing clues and card draw,

– White maintaining order through removal and protection.

A successful investigation requires a dynamic team, and the team in this Scooby-Doo-themed deck had each card fulfilling its role, akin to characters playing their parts on the show. Tireless Tracker ensured a steady stream of clues whenever lands came into play. Thorough Investigation rewarded bold moves like attacking by placing more clues into your arsenal, while Jolrael, Mwonvuli Recluse helped transform your invested resources into creature tokens.

Long before the plot’s resolution, by the midgame, you’d find yourself with a board populated by artifacts. This naturally meant the deck could pivot into an artifact strategy if necessity demanded an alternative win condition.

Gameplay-wise, the deck plays out with the cadence of a well-timed episode. Early turns are spent on laying the groundwork with cards like Cultivate and Farseek helping you establish a solid mana base. Once Morska is on the scene, the act of investigating whirls into motion—a perfect blend of intrigue, strategic thinking, and timing. The flow of the game mirrors the Scooby Gang stealthily tiptoeing through a haunted mansion, uncovering the mystery one spectral clue at a time.

When it comes to claiming victory, this imaginative deck offers several paths to success. Morska herself can grow enormous enough to deal lethal Commander damage. Alternatively, the legions of token creatures she helps amass can overwhelm opponents in a swarm, and finally, the artifact synergy can convert those valued Clues into a formidable advantage—culminating in a scenario familiar to any fan: the revelation that closes the case.

This Scooby-Doo-inspired concoction finds its sweet spot within the mid to high casual range. Not only is it consistently engaging and brimming with resilience, but it also guarantees every game to be filled with intrigue as it seamlessly aligns with the spirit of its iconic muse. When you draw cards and gather clues, you aren’t just making moves on cardboard, you’re recreating the heartbeat of a beloved classic: sleuths piecing together puzzles to unmask yet another villainous plot.

So the next time you shuffle up this intriguing Mystery Machine to join your playgroup’s table, remember—it’s not just a series of plays towards a win. It’s a narrative—a story that unfolds once more, every time that deck box lid closes.
